About Us

The availability of Open Educational Resources (OER) with a South Dakota focus has significantly increased over the last few years. The Open Textbook Network site will house links to these projects.

The project began as a result of TIE’s vision to expand the availability of quality OER in South Dakota to meet a wide variety of learning needs. The South Dakota 4th-8th Grade Social Studies project was funded in part through a South Dakota Department of Education Classroom Innovation Grant.

About This Work

Classroom educators from across the region were invited to contribute to the creation of these Open Educational Resources. The resources support learning that is directly aligned to South Dakota standards. Large textbook companies generally don’t write their content to meet the needs of a sparsely populated state like South Dakota. When it comes to 4th grade content, which is very specific to South Dakota, traditional textbook materials do not exist.

Are these resources perfect? No. Will you occasionally find a typo or a broken link? Yes. Is this better than the alternative offering of a big corporate textbook crafted for California & Texas standards? Definitely!

These “textbooks” or should I say techbooks, are being released in a Google Doc format to make them highly accessible for all schools. Google docs is not the most visually pleasing format, but we made the decision to trade “pretty” for functional and accessible.
